Understanding the Australian Curriculum

Australia runs a national curriculum for Foundation to Year 10, developed by ACARA, and eight separate senior secondary systems for Years 11 and 12. Both halves matter, and they are governed by different authorities.

ACARA

The national Australian Curriculum, Foundation to Year 10

State Syllabus

NESA, VCAA, QCAA and SCSA deliver it their own way

Senior Certificates

VCE, HSC, QCE, WACE, SACE, TCE, NTCET and the ACT certificate

ATAR

The rank used for tertiary admission, with subject scaling applied

The national framework is not delivered identically everywhere. Victoria teaches the Victorian Curriculum F–10, New South Wales works through NESA syllabuses, and Queensland uses ACiQ. A tutor who only knows the ACARA documents will be approximately right and specifically wrong.

Every State, Every Syllabus

Tutoring Matched to Your State's Syllabus

Your child is taught, assessed and graded under a state authority, and the certificate they finish with differs in every state and territory. We match by state as well as subject, so nobody is taught VCE technique for an HSC exam.

New South Wales : NESA syllabuses, the HSC and Bands 1 to 6
Victoria : Victorian Curriculum F–10, VCE study designs and SACs
Queensland : ACiQ, the QCE and external assessment
Western Australia : SCSA curriculum, WACE and ATAR courses
South Australia : SACE, including the Research Project
Tasmania : TASC and the Tasmanian Certificate of Education
ACT & NT : BSSS certificate and the NTCET
NAPLAN : Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in March each year

Moving interstate mid-schooling? Tell us and we will map where the syllabuses diverge, because the gaps are rarely where families expect them.

How the Australian Curriculum Progresses

The national curriculum sets the shape for Foundation to Year 10, then each state takes over. These are the stages where Australian students most often lose ground.

Foundation to Year 2

Counting, number recognition, simple addition and subtraction, shapes and early measurement, alongside living things, weather and everyday materials in science. Nothing is externally assessed yet, so difficulties here surface only when NAPLAN arrives in Year 3.

Years 3 to 6

Multiplication, division, fractions and decimals, area and volume, with the first NAPLAN tests in Years 3 and 5. Fractions are the usual sticking point, and they are the root of a surprising share of Year 9 algebra problems.

Years 7 to 10

Algebra, linear equations, geometry, statistics, probability and financial maths, with science splitting into cells, atoms, energy and genetics. This is where readiness for senior Maths Methods is genuinely decided.

Years 11 and 12

Mathematical Methods, Specialist, General and Essential Maths, plus senior sciences, all under your state's certificate. Subject selection here determines university prerequisites, and scaling means the choice affects the ATAR as well as the marks.

Exam Preparation

Exams We Prepare Students For

Knowing the content is one thing; meeting the marking guidelines is another. Our tutors cover marking guidelines, timed papers, SACs and internal assessment, alongside the subject selection decisions that shape an ATAR long before Year 12 begins.

On NAPLAN, it is worth being clear about what it is. Since the 2023 reforms it runs in March for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, covering reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy, and results are reported against four proficiency levels. It is diagnostic rather than pass-or-fail, and familiarity with the online adaptive format matters more than drilling practice papers.

Exams & Assessments We Cover

  • NAPLAN in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9
  • VCE in Victoria, including SACs and study scores
  • HSC in New South Wales, including trials and Bands 1 to 6
  • QCE, WACE, SACE, TCE and NTCET
  • ATAR subject selection and scaling advice

Syllabuses, assessment structures and certificate requirements are set by ACARA and the state curriculum authorities, and are periodically revised. Confirm the current position with your child's school, since states revise independently.

How Math Make Smart Supports the Australian Curriculum

Matched by State and Syllabus

Tutors are assessed on the syllabus your child is examined against, whether that is a NESA syllabus in Sydney or a VCAA study design in Melbourne. The difference is not cosmetic.

Working with Children Checked

Every tutor holds a current Working with Children Check for their state before taking a student. Lessons are stored in your account, and contact never moves off the platform.

Progress You Can Read
