MHF4U vs MCV4U: Choosing Ontario's Grade 12 University Math Courses

Quick answer: In Ontario, MHF4U (Advanced Functions) and MCV4U (Calculus and Vectors) are Grade 12 university-preparation math courses. They aren't alternatives: MCV4U builds on MHF4U, and the Ontario curriculum says MHF4U must be taken before or at the same time as MCV4U. MHF4U needs Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U) or MCT4C. In both courses, 70% of the grade comes from work during the course and 30% from a final evaluation. Many science, engineering and business programs ask for one or both, so check each university program's requirements.
The two courses at a glance
MHF4U: Advanced Functions
Prerequisite: MCR3U (Grade 11 Functions) or MCT4C
Main topics: polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions; rates of change
Typical next step: MCV4U, MDM4U, or university programs that need functions
MCV4U: Calculus and Vectors
Prerequisite: MHF4U, completed before or taken at the same time
Main topics: derivatives and their applications; vectors, lines and planes in three dimensions
Typical next step: university calculus, linear algebra, physics, engineering

How they fit together
The Ontario curriculum allows students to take MHF4U and MCV4U concurrently, or MHF4U first (Ontario curriculum). A school board summary puts it plainly: MHF4U "must be taken prior to OR concurrently with" MCV4U (YRDSB).
So the real choice isn't which one; it's when.
Option 1: MHF4U first, then MCV4U
The most common route. A student takes Advanced Functions in one semester and Calculus and Vectors the next. It gives time to get comfortable with functions before calculus.
Best for: most students, and anyone who found MCR3U challenging.
Option 2: both at the same time
Some schools timetable the two together, in the same semester or across a full year.
Best for: students who were strong in MCR3U and need both courses on a tight timeline. It's demanding, because MCV4U uses functions that MHF4U is still teaching.
Option 3: MHF4U in summer school or online
Some students take MHF4U over the summer to free up space for MCV4U and other Grade 12 courses.
Be cautious: a compressed MHF4U can leave gaps right before MCV4U. Check that summer marks will be ready in time for university applications.
How the grade is calculated
In Ontario secondary courses, 70% of the final grade comes from evaluations during the course and 30% from a final evaluation near the end. The final evaluation can be an exam, a project or another task. A credit needs a final mark of 50% or higher (Ontario curriculum).
What that means in practice: strong term work protects you, but a weak final can still pull the mark down by several points. For example, a student with 88% term work and 70% on the final gets:
0.70 × 88 = 61.6
0.30 × 70 = 21.0
Final mark: 82.6%
For university applications, that difference matters, so prepare for the final as seriously as unit tests.
A taste of each course
MHF4U: logarithms
Solve 2ˣ = 32.
Since 32 = 2⁵, x = 5. For equations like 3ˣ = 20 that don't simplify, take logarithms: x = log 20 ÷ log 3 ≈ 2.73.
MCV4U: derivatives
Find the slope of the tangent to f(x) = x³ − 6x at x = 2.
f′(x) = 3x² − 6. At x = 2: 3(4) − 6 = 6.
Which programs need which course?
Requirements vary by university and program, and they change, so always check the official admissions page for each program you're considering. As a general pattern:
Engineering and physical sciences commonly list both MHF4U and MCV4U.
Business and commerce programs often list MHF4U, and some also list MCV4U or MDM4U (Data Management).
Life sciences programs vary; some ask for MHF4U or MCV4U.
This is a general pattern, not a rule. Check each program directly.
Common mistakes
Assuming MCV4U can replace MHF4U. It can't; MHF4U is required before or with it.
Rushing MHF4U in summer. Gaps in logarithms and trig functions show up immediately in calculus.
Ignoring the final evaluation. It's 30% of the grade.
Checking requirements too late. Look at program prerequisites before Grade 12 course selection.
When extra help makes sense
Support can help when a student found MCR3U hard and is about to start MHF4U, when they're taking both courses concurrently, or when MCV4U marks are below what a university program needs.
A tutor can't guarantee a mark, but can work on functions, logarithms, trigonometry and calculus skills, and help prepare for final evaluations. Math Make Smart offers online math tutoring for Ontario courses including MHF4U and MCV4U, and you can book a free trial lesson. For earlier Ontario math, see our Grade 9 math guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take MHF4U and MCV4U at the same time?
Yes. The Ontario curriculum allows them to be taken concurrently.
What's the prerequisite for MHF4U?
MCR3U (Grade 11 Functions) or MCT4C.
How much is the final exam worth?
