PSAT Scores 2026: When They Come Out and How to Read Your Score Report

Quick answer: Fall 2026 PSAT/NMSQT scores come out in three waves depending on when your school sent in answers: October 22, November 5 and November 12, 2026. The total score runs from 320 to 1520, made up of Reading and Writing (160–760) and Math (160–760). Students see scores in the BigFuture School app or at studentscores.collegeboard.org. The Selection Index (48–228) is what National Merit uses.
When fall 2026 PSAT scores come out
The fall 2026 in-school testing window was October 1–30, 2026. Scores are released in waves based on when each school submitted answers (College Board — score release dates):
School submitted answers by October 9: students see scores October 22, 2026
School submitted answers by October 23: students see scores November 5, 2026
School submitted answers by October 30: students see scores November 12, 2026
Why your friend got scores first: the release date depends on when your school sent answers, not on the day you tested. If you're unsure, ask your school counselor which wave you're in.
How to see your scores
From the College Board's score guide (College Board — Understanding Scores):
BigFuture School app: US students aged 13 and older who gave a mobile number get a text when scores are ready.
Online: students aged 13 and older can log in at studentscores.collegeboard.org.
At school: schools can download each student's score report PDF.
Under 13: review the report with a school counselor.
What the numbers mean
Total score: 320–1520
Reading and Writing: 160–760
Math: 160–760
Selection Index: 48–228
The College Board notes that scores naturally vary a little: about ±40 for the total, ±20 for Reading and Writing and ±30 for Math (College Board). A score that's 20 points lower than a friend's may not mean much.
Benchmarks: are you on track?
The score report shows whether you met the grade-level benchmarks (College Board):
10th grade: Reading and Writing 430 · Math 480
11th grade: Reading and Writing 460 · Math 510
Meeting a benchmark suggests you're on track for college readiness in that area. Missing one tells you where to focus, not that you've failed.
Percentiles
The official PDF shows an All Tester Percentile, based on the past three years of 10th- and 11th-grade test takers. The online portal also shows country and state percentiles. A percentile of 75 means you scored the same as or higher than about 75% of that group.
Working out your Selection Index
National Merit uses the Selection Index: double your Reading and Writing score, add your Math score, and divide by 10 (College Board).
Worked example: Reading and Writing 650, Math 620.
(2 × 650 + 620) ÷ 10 = (1,300 + 620) ÷ 10 = 192.
Notice that Reading and Writing counts twice. For how cutoffs work, see our PSAT Selection Index and National Merit guide.
The Knowledge and Skills section
The report also breaks performance into eight content domains, four in Reading and Writing and four in Math. This is the most useful part for planning: it shows exactly which skills to work on before the SAT.
What to do next
Check the benchmarks. Note which section is below target.
Look at Knowledge and Skills. Pick the two weakest domains.
Decide on the SAT timeline. Most juniors take the SAT in spring.
If you're near National Merit range, check the Selection Index and state cutoffs.

Common mistakes
Panicking over small differences. Scores vary by ±40 points.
Ignoring Knowledge and Skills. It's the best guide to what to study.
Assuming the Selection Index is just the total score. Reading and Writing counts double.

When extra support might help
Support is worth considering if Math is below the benchmark, if a junior is close to National Merit range, or if a student wants a plan from PSAT to SAT.
A tutor can't guarantee a score, but can target the weak domains on the report. Math Make Smart offers PSAT preparation and SAT preparation, and you can book a free trial lesson. For the SAT math section, see our digital SAT math guide.
