Understanding the Canadian Curriculum
Understanding the Canadian K–12 Curriculum: Unlike the United States, Canada does not have a single national curriculum. Education in Canada is a provincial and territorial responsibility, meaning each province and territory develops and manages its own curriculum frameworks, standards, and assessments. Despite these differences, there is strong alignment across provinces in the core subjects of Mathematics, Science, and English Language Arts, particularly at the elementary and middle school levels.
The two most widely referenced curriculum frameworks across Canada are:
The Western and Northern Canadian Protocol (WNCP)
A collaborative framework used by British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut to align curriculum expectations in Math, Science, and English Language Arts across Western Canada.
Ontario Curriculum
Developed by the Ontario Ministry of Education, this is the most widely followed provincial curriculum in Canada due to Ontario’s population size. It sets detailed expectations for every grade and subject from Grade 1 through Grade 12.
The Canadian K–12 system is broadly divided into three stages:
lementary School (Grades 1–8)
Foundational literacy, numeracy, and science across all provinces
Middle School / Junior High (Grades 7–9)
Varies by province; subject-specific instruction begins
High School / Secondary School (Grades 9–12)
Province-specific diploma requirements; standardised assessments in Ontario, Alberta, and BC
Science
Science (Ontario Science Curriculum & WNCP Science, Grades 1–12)
Canadian Science education follows an inquiry-based, strand-driven approach across all provinces, encouraging students to investigate, question, and apply scientific thinking to real-world problems.
Elementary Science (Grades 1–8)
At the elementary level, Science is typically an integrated subject covering four broad strands:
- Life Systems — Living things, habitats, ecosystems, and the human body
- Matter & Energy — Properties of materials, states of matter, forces, and simple machines
- Structures & Mechanisms — Engineering and design thinking, pulleys, levers, and structures
- Earth & Space Systems — Weather, soils, the solar system, and environmental stewardship
In Ontario, each Grade has a dedicated Science & Technology strand pairing. In Alberta, these concepts are delivered through the Alberta Program of Studies for Science, while BC follows the BC Science Curriculum (redesigned 2015+) built around Big Ideas and Core Competencies.
Secondary Science (Grades 9–12)
At the secondary level, Science separates into specialist subjects:
- Grade 9–10 Science — Integrated or combined Science (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics concepts together). In Ontario this is SNC1D/SNC1P (Grade 9) and SNC2D/SNC2P (Grade 10).
- Grade 11–12 Biology — Cell biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, and anatomy. Ontario: SBI3U / SBI4U.
- Grade 11–12 Chemistry — Atomic structure, chemical bonding, organic chemistry, and quantitative relationships. Ontario: SCH3U / SCH4U.
- Grade 11–12 Physics — Kinematics, forces, energy, waves, electricity, and modern physics. Ontario: SPH3U / SPH4U.
In Alberta, Grade 12 Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are examined through the Alberta Diploma Exams, which count for 30% of the final course grade. In BC, the Graduation Program includes provincial exams for select Grade 12 subjects.
Math
Math (Ontario Mathematics Curriculum & WNCP Mathematics, Grades 1–12)
Mathematics is a compulsory subject from Grade 1 through Grade 12 across all Canadian provinces. While each province has its own curriculum, the overall progression of topics is closely aligned, particularly at the elementary and middle school levels.
Elementary Math (Grades 1–8)
The Canadian elementary Math curriculum is organised around five core strands:
- Number Sense & Numeration: Whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, integers, and number relationships
- Measurement: Length, area, volume, time, mass, and applied measurement
- Geometry & Spatial Sense: 2D and 3D shapes, coordinates, transformations, and geometric reasoning
- Patterning & Algebra: Patterns, variables, expressions, equations, and introduction to functions
- Data Management & Probability: Collecting, organising, and interpreting data; basic probability
In Ontario, the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum (2020 revision) introduced financial literacy and coding as new strands from Grades 1–8. In BC, the redesigned curriculum frames math learning through Big Ideas and emphasises reasoning and communication alongside procedural fluency.
Secondary Math (Grades 9–12)
At the secondary level, Math pathways diverge by province and by academic stream:
- Grade 9 Math: Foundational algebra, linear relations, and measurement. Ontario: MPM1D (Academic) / MFM1P (Applied).
- Grade 10 Math: Quadratic relations, trigonometry, and analytic geometry. Ontario: MPM2D (Academic) / MFM2P (Applied).
- Grade 11 Math: Functions (MHF3U in Ontario), or workplace/college-prep streams.
- Grade 12 Math: Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and Calculus & Vectors (MCV4U) are the two most common pre-university courses in Ontario. In Alberta, Mathematics 30-1 (pre-calculus) and Mathematics 30-2 are the main Grade 12 options, both assessed via Diploma Exams.
In Alberta, Grade 12 Math Diploma Exams are high-stakes, counting for 30% of the course mark. Strong exam preparation is essential.
English
English (Ontario English Curriculum & WNCP English Language Arts, Grades 1–12)
English Language Arts (ELA) is a compulsory subject from Grade 1 through Grade 12 across all Canadian provinces. The curriculum balances oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy throughout every grade.
Elementary English (Grades 1–8)
The Canadian elementary ELA curriculum is built around four interconnected strands:
- Oral Communication: Listening, speaking, and presenting clearly in a variety of contexts
- Reading: Decoding, comprehension, fluency, and critical analysis of literary and informational texts
- Writing: Personal, narrative, informational, and persuasive writing with attention to grammar, spelling, and conventions
- Media Literacy: Identifying, analysing, and creating media texts across digital and print formats
In Ontario, the 2023 revised Language Curriculum introduced a stronger focus on phonics-based reading instruction from Grades 1–3 and critical thinking around media and digital communication from Grades 4–8.
Secondary English (Grades 9–12)
At the secondary level, English expands in depth and complexity:
- Grade 9–10 English: Literary analysis of novels, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction; essay writing and oral presentation. Ontario: ENG1D / ENG2D.
- Grade 11 English: Independent research, literary analysis, and advanced writing skills. Ontario: ENG3U (university preparation).
- Grade 12 English: Extended essay writing, sophisticated literary analysis, seminal texts, and independent reading. Ontario: ENG4U is a prerequisite for most Ontario university programs.
In Alberta, Grade 12 English Language Arts is assessed through the Diploma Exam (30% of final mark).
