Every August, thousands of Irish families sit down at a kitchen table and try to work out what a set of numbers actually means. H2 in Biology. O3 in Maths. 477 points. Round One offers, cut-off changes. For students, it is the culmination of two years of work. For parents, particularly those who sat the Leaving Cert under the old A/B/C grading system, or who did not go through the Irish system at all, the CAO points system can feel deliberately opaque.
It is not. It follows a clear, consistent logic, and once you understand how points are calculated, how cut-offs are set, and where the leverage points are, you can make genuinely informed decisions rather than hoping for the best. What Is the CAO?
The Central Applications Office (CAO) is the organisation that processes applications to undergraduate courses at Irish higher education institutions. Based in Galway, it handles applications to universities, technological universities, institutes of technology, and colleges of education across Ireland.
Crucially, the CAO does not decide who gets a place. It is an administrative processing body. Each college sets its own entry criteria and decides which applicants to offer places to. The CAO collects applications, processes them against the criteria supplied by the colleges, and issues offers on the colleges' behalf.
This distinction matters. When people talk about "CAO points going up," they are describing an outcome of supply and demand at individual colleges, not a decision made by the CAO itself. Students apply through a single application listing their preferred courses in genuine order of preference. That order is the most important strategic decision in the entire process, and we will come back to why.
The Leaving Cert Grading System (H1-H8 and O1-O8)
Since 2017, the Leaving Certificate has used a grading system with eight grade bands at each level, replacing the older A1/A2/B1/B2 structure.
Higher Level grades are prefixed with H. Ordinary Level grades are prefixed with O.

The percentage bands are identical at both levels; the difference is the difficulty of the paper. A H4 and an O4 both represent 60–70%, but the Higher Level paper is substantially more demanding, which is why they attract very different points.
One critical point that catches students out: at Higher Level, a H7 (30–40%) still earns points. At Ordinary Level, an O7 earns zero points. This asymmetry is deliberate; it exists to encourage students to attempt Higher Level papers without fear of walking away with nothing.

This is the table that converts grades into points. Each subject can contribute a maximum of 100 points.

The key insight from this table
Look at the overlap. An O1 at Ordinary Level (56 points) is worth the same as a H5 at Higher Level (56 points). And a H6, a bare 40% at Higher Level, earns 46 points, more than an O2 (46 points, tied) and considerably more than an O3 (37 points).
This has a direct practical consequence: a student who can achieve a H6 or better at Higher Level is almost always better off staying at Higher Level than dropping to Ordinary, even if their Higher Level grade feels disappointing. Dropping to Ordinary Level only makes sense if a student is genuinely at risk of an H8, or if the stress of the Higher paper is damaging performance across their other subjects.
This is one of the most consequential decisions a 5th or 6th Year student makes, and it is frequently made on emotion rather than arithmetic.
How Your Points Are Calculated, The Best Six Rule
Your CAO points total is calculated from your best six subjects in a single Leaving Certificate sitting.
Maximum possible from six subjects: 6 × 100 = 600 points. Maximum including the Higher Level Maths bonus: 625 points
What this means practically
Most students sit seven subjects. Some sit eight. Only the best six count toward the points total.
This creates a genuine strategic buffer. A student sitting seven subjects who has one that goes badly on the day still has six solid results to draw from. A student sitting exactly six subjects has no safety net; one bad exam directly reduces their total.
The rules that apply
- All six subjects must come from the same sitting of the Leaving Cert. You cannot combine your best results across two different years.
- Subjects must be recognised for CAO points purposes.
- Certain subject combinations are restricted by some colleges (for example, some institutions will not count both Physics and Physics & Chemistry).
- The LCVP Link Modules can count as one of the six (see Section 6).

A student sits seven subjects and receives:

The Ordinary Level Business result is discarded because it is the seventh-best. The student's total is unaffected by it, which is exactly why sitting a seventh subject is a sensible insurance policy.
The Higher Level Maths Bonus: 25 Extra Points
This is the single most impactful feature of the Irish points system, and the one most worth understanding early.
Students who achieve a H6 or above in Higher Level Maths receive an additional 25 CAO points.
Introduced in 2012 to address a national shortage of students entering STEM courses, the bonus applies automatically; there is nothing to apply for. It appears only if Higher Level Maths is one of the six subjects counting toward the total.

Study that table carefully. An H6 in Higher Level Maths, a bare 40%, is worth 71 points. That is more than an H4 in any other subject (66 points). A student scraping a pass at Higher Level Maths outperforms a student getting a comfortable 60–70% in any other Higher Level subject.
An H5 in Higher Maths (81 points) beats an H2 in every other subject (88 points is close, but the Maths student needs only 50%).
The strategic implication
This changes the calculus on level choice entirely. A student wavering between Higher and Ordinary Level Maths should understand that:
- Ordinary Level Maths maximum: O1 = 56 points
- Higher Level Maths at just 40%: H6 = 71 points
A student who scrapes an H6 at Higher Level beats a student who gets a perfect O1 at Ordinary Level by 15 points. The threshold to be aware of is the drop from H6 to H7. At H7, the bonus disappears entirely, and the student receives just 37 points. The bonus rewards clearing 40%, and it rewards it substantially.

LCVP Link Modules
The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) Link Modules can count as one of a student's six subjects for points purposes.

A Distinction in Link Modules is worth the same as an H4 in a full Higher Level subject, a genuinely valuable contribution for students taking the LCVP route.
Foundation Level Maths
Foundation Level Maths does not attract CAO points at most institutions. Some institutions accept it for specific matriculation purposes, but students should assume it contributes zero points and check individual college requirements carefully.
Other qualifications
Students applying with QQI/FET awards, A-Levels, International Baccalaureate, or other qualifications are assessed through separate scoring systems. These are outside the scope of this guide, but the CAO publishes conversion tables for each.
How Cut-Off Points Are Actually Decided
This is the part most misunderstood by students and parents alike.
Points requirements are not set in advance by colleges. No one sits down in September and decides that Law at UCD will require 520 points next year.
Instead, cut-off points are a result of a simple mechanical process:
- A course has a fixed number of places, say 100.
- Everyone who applied and listed that course is ranked by CAO points, highest to lowest.
- Offers go out from the top of that list down until all 100 places are filled.
- The points score of the last person offered a place becomes the published cut-off.
That is the entire mechanism. The cut-off is simply the score of the final person who got in.
Why points go up and down
Points move for two reasons:
- Demand changes. If more students apply for a course than last year, competition rises, and the cut-off rises with it. When a career field is in the news, nursing, computer science, veterinary medicine, construction- applications typically spike and points follow.
- Supply changes. If a college increases the number of places on a course, more applicants are accommodated, and the cut-off usually falls. Conversely, reducing places pushes points up.
- Overall grade performance also matters. In years when national Leaving Cert results are stronger, more students achieve high points, and cut-offs across the board rise accordingly.
What this means for students
Last year's points are a guide, not a guarantee. A course that required 450 points last year might require 465 this year or 435; nobody knows until offers are issued.
The practical response is straightforward: do not use last year's points to decide whether to apply for a course. Apply for what you genuinely want in genuine order of preference, and let the system do the rest. A student who leaves their dream course off the list because "I probably will not get the points" removes the only chance they had of being offered it.
Course Levels: Level 8, Level 7 and Level 6
Irish higher education courses sit at different levels on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). The CAO form has two separate lists.

Students can apply for up to ten Level 8 courses and up to ten Level 7/6 courses on the same application, twenty choices in total.
Why the Level 7/6 list matters
This is one of the most valuable and most underused features of the CAO system. Level 7 and Level 6 courses generally have lower points requirements than Level 8 courses in the same field.
Critically, Ireland has well-established progression pathways. A student who completes a Level 7 ordinary degree can frequently progress to the final year of a related Level 8 honours degree, finishing with the same qualification as a direct entrant, just via a different route.
Filling in the Level 7/6 list costs nothing and creates a genuine safety net. A student who lists only Level 8 courses and misses the points for all of them has no offer at all. A student who also listed Level 7 options has a viable pathway into their chosen field.
Advice: always complete both lists.
Matriculation: Why Points Alone Are Not Enough
Points get you into the queue. Matriculation requirements decide whether you are eligible to be in that queue at all.
Every course has minimum subject requirements that must be met regardless of how many points a student achieves. A student with 550 points who has not met the minimum entry requirements for a course will not be offered a place on it.
Common matriculation requirements
Most Level 8 courses require, as a baseline:
- A minimum of six subjects
- At least two H5 grades (some courses require more or higher)
- A minimum grade in English, typically O6/H7
- A minimum grade in Maths, typically O6/H7
- For most universities, a third language (though this requirement has been dropped or relaxed at several institutions in recent years)
Course-specific requirements are where students get caught:

The action for students
Check the matriculation requirements for every course on your list, in 5th Year, not 6th. Subject choices made at the end of Transition Year or early 5th Year can quietly close off entire career pathways if a required subject is not taken.
A student who decides in 6th Year that they want to study Medicine but did not take Chemistry has a genuine problem. A student who checks in 5th Year has time to change.
This is also where the science subjects matter most concretely. Many Health Science, Science, Engineering and Nursing courses require a laboratory science — which is why targeted support in Leaving Cert Biology, Leaving Cert Chemistry, or Leaving Cert Physics is not just about points, but about eligibility.
The CAO Application Timeline
The CAO year runs on a fixed schedule. Missing a deadline has real consequences, and several of these dates are non-negotiable.

The deadlines that matter most
1 February is the critical date. Applications after this move to the late application process, which carries a higher fee and excludes certain restricted courses (including Medicine, and courses requiring portfolios, auditions, or interviews). A student who misses 1 February may be permanently unable to apply for their intended course that year.
1 March is the deadline for HEAR and DARE supporting documentation. This deadline is strictly enforced. Students who miss it lose access to those schemes for the entire year, regardless of eligibility.
1 July is the Change of Mind deadline, and it is genuinely important. See the next section.
Exact dates shift slightly year to year. Always verify current dates directly at cao.ie.
Change of Mind, The Most Underused Opportunity
Between 1 May and 1 July, students can completely restructure their course list at no cost. They can add courses, remove courses, and most importantly reorder their preferences.
Everything except restricted-application courses and certain Level 8 courses that were not on the original application can be changed.
Why this matters so much
The application submitted in January is made by a student in the middle of 5th or 6th Year, months before mock results, before subject strengths have fully emerged, and often before any real research has been done.
By June, that student is a different applicant. They have mock results. They understand their subject strengths realistically. They have attended open days. They may have discovered a course they had never heard of in January.
Change of Mind exists precisely to allow the application to catch up with reality. Students should treat their January application as a first draft and their July submission as the real one.
The single most important rule of Change of Mind
Always list courses in genuine order of preference.
The CAO system is designed so that this is always the optimal strategy. You can only ever receive one offer per list per round, the highest course on your list for which you qualify. Listing a course you want less above a course you want more can only ever hurt you. There is no tactical advantage whatsoever to ordering courses by likelihood of getting them.
Put the course you most want at number one, even if it seems out of reach. If you do not get it, the system moves to number two automatically. You lose nothing.
Offer Rounds Explained
Offers are issued in rounds, and understanding how they work removes a great deal of unnecessary anxiety.
- Round Zero (early July): Offers to mature applicants, deferred entry students, QQI/FET applicants, and some other categories assessed outside the Leaving Cert results timeline.
- Round One (late August): The main round, issued shortly after Leaving Cert results. Every applicant receives the highest course on their list for which they qualify, one offer from the Level 8 list and one from the Level 7/6 list if eligible for both.
- Round Two and subsequent rounds (from early September): When students decline offers or accept places elsewhere, places free up. Those places are offered to the next applicants in the ranking, which is why points can drop in later rounds.
Accepting an offer
Accepting a Round One offer does not remove a student from consideration for courses higher on their list in later rounds. If a higher preference becomes available in Round Two, it will still be offered.
This is genuinely important and frequently misunderstood. Students should accept a Round One offer they are happy with, secure in the knowledge that a better offer can still arrive.
Available places
After the main rounds, colleges publish an Available Places list of courses with remaining capacity. Students can apply to these directly, often with lower points requirements. This is a real second chance and is worth monitoring closely.
Random Selection at the Cut-Off
Occasionally, more students achieve exactly the cut-off points than places are remaining.
When this happens, random selection is applied. All applicants on the same points score at the cut-off are entered into a random draw for the remaining places.
This is why you sometimes hear of two students with identical points where one received an offer and the other did not. It is not an error, and it is not a hidden tiebreaker; it is a genuinely random allocation applied to ensure fairness when there is no other basis for distinction.
The practical implication: a student sitting exactly on last year's cut-off is not safe. Points above the cut-off are always more secure than points at it, another reason why maximising every available point matters.
HEAR, DARE and Access Routes
Two national schemes provide reduced-points entry for students who meet specific eligibility criteria.
HEAR: Higher Education Access Route
For students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Eligibility is assessed against a combination of financial, social, and educational indicators, including household income and school characteristics.
Successful HEAR applicants can be offered a place with reduced points, along with academic and financial support once enrolled.
DARE: Disability Access Route to Education
For students with a verified disability that has had a significant negative impact on their second-level education. This includes physical disabilities, sensory disabilities, specific learning difficulties (including dyslexia and dyspraxia), ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, and significant ongoing illnesses and mental health conditions.
Successful DARE applicants can be offered a place with reduced points, plus access to disability support services in college.
The absolutely critical deadline
Both schemes require the student to:
- Indicate their interest on the CAO application by 1 February
- Complete the relevant sections of the online application by 1 March
- Submit all supporting documentation by 1 March
These deadlines are strictly enforced with no exceptions. Every year, eligible students lose access to these schemes because documentation arrived late. Gathering medical or financial evidence takes time; students who might be eligible should begin in November or December, not February.
Points Strategy: Where the Real Leverage Is
Understanding the system is one thing. Using it well is another. Here is where the genuine leverage sits.
1. The Higher Level Maths bonus is the single highest-return decision
Nothing else in the Leaving Cert offers 25 free points. A student who can secure an H6 or better in Higher Level Maths gains points that would otherwise require a full grade improvement across two other subjects. If a student is borderline, this is the first place to invest effort.
2. Sit a seventh subject
The best six count. A seventh subject is a free insurance policy against one bad day. It costs additional study time, but it removes the catastrophic downside of a single subject going wrong.
3. Improving your weakest counting subject is worth more than perfecting your strongest
Moving from H1 to a "better H1" is worth zero points. Moving your sixth-best subject from H5 to H3 is worth 21 points. Students naturally gravitate toward subjects they enjoy and perform well in. The points system rewards the opposite instinct.
4. Understand the grade-band gaps
The gap between adjacent grades varies:

That last row is the one to remember. Nothing else in the system comes close.
5. Do not drop to Ordinary Level too early
The H6 (46 points) versus O1 (56 points) comparison looks like it favours Ordinary, but only if the student is confident of a genuine O1. In practice, most students who drop from Higher to Ordinary do not achieve O1. And in Maths specifically, the bonus makes Higher Level clearly superior even at H6.
6. Use Change of Mind properly
Revisit your entire list in June with mock results in hand. Reorder honestly. Add Level 7/6 options as a genuine safety net.
7. Check matriculation in 5th Year
The most damaging CAO mistakes are made in subject selection, two years before the application is submitted.
The Subjects That Move the Points Needle Most
All six counting subjects contribute equally in principle. In practice, three subject areas have outsized influence on both points totals and course eligibility.
Maths: the highest-leverage subject in the entire system
No other subject carries a 25-point bonus. No other subject appears in the matriculation requirements of as many courses. And no other subject creates as much anxiety among Leaving Cert students.
Higher Level Maths under Project Maths demands genuine conceptual understanding rather than memorised procedures. The topics students most often lose marks on are calculus (differentiation and integration), complex numbers, statistical inference and hypothesis testing, and the algebra-heavy problem-solving questions that appear across every paper.
The gap between an H7 and an H6 in Higher Maths is worth 34 CAO points, more than any other single grade movement available anywhere in the Leaving Cert. For a student sitting on that boundary, targeted Leaving Cert Maths grinds represent the highest-return academic investment available to them.
For students already secure at Higher Level, the same principle applies further up the scale: moving from H4 to H3 is worth 11 points, and doing that in Maths is often more achievable than in a content-heavy subject because Maths improvement comes from method, not memorisation.
English: compulsory, high-stakes, and frequently under-prepared
English is compulsory, meaning it appears in almost every student's six counting subjects whether they are strong at it or not. It is also a matriculation requirement for virtually every course in the country.
Leaving Cert English is deceptively demanding. Paper 1 requires students to produce a polished composition, personal essay, short story, speech, or article, under significant time pressure. Paper 2 requires a Single Text essay, a Comparative Study essay covering three texts across three modes (Cultural Context, Theme or Issue, Literary Genre), an unseen poetry response, and a studied poetry essay.
Many students who are perfectly capable readers underperform in English because they have never been taught the specific structural techniques examiners reward: a clear controlling idea sustained across an essay, purposeful quotation rather than decorative quotation, and comparative writing that genuinely compares rather than describing three texts in sequence.
This is precisely the kind of skill that improves quickly with focused one-to-one attention. Leaving Cert English grinds work directly on the texts a student's own school has chosen, not generic examples, and on the essay structures that separate a H4 from a H2.
The Sciences: points and eligibility together
Biology, Chemistry, and Physics do double duty in the CAO system. They contribute points like any other subject, but they also satisfy the laboratory science requirement that gates entry to Science, Health Science, Nursing, Engineering, Medicine, Veterinary, and many other courses.
Each science presents a distinct challenge:
- Biology is the most-taken science subject in Ireland and carries an enormous volume of content across nine units, plus mandatory experiments. Students underestimate the precision of language required — Biology answers are marked against specific key terms.
- Chemistry demands mathematical fluency that catches students out, particularly in stoichiometry, mole calculations, and volumetric analysis. Organic chemistry is consistently the highest-difficulty section.
- Physics requires the strongest algebraic ability of the three, and students who are weaker in Maths frequently struggle in Physics for that reason rather than because of the Physics content itself.
All three carry substantial mandatory experiment requirements that appear directly in the written examination; students are asked about procedures, apparatus, observations, and sources of error for specific prescribed experiments.
Specialist Leaving Cert Science grinds, or subject-specific support in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, address exactly these subject-specific difficulties, which a general science teacher covering three disciplines across a full class cannot always do individually.
When Grinds Genuinely Make a Difference
Grinds are not a universal solution, and it would be dishonest to suggest otherwise. But there are specific, identifiable situations where one-to-one support produces a measurable change in outcome.
Your child is borderline on Higher Level Maths. This is the clearest case in the entire Irish system. Securing an H6 rather than a H7 is worth 34 points. Nothing else available offers that return.
They are one grade band from a points threshold. A student projected at 455 points looking at a course that required 470 last year needs roughly two grade improvements. That is achievable with focused work in the right subjects — and identifying which subjects offer the easiest improvement is exactly what a good tutor does first.
There is one topic blocking an entire subject. Calculus in Maths. Organic chemistry. The comparative study in English. Volumetric analysis. Genetics. When a single topic is blocking progress across a whole subject, targeted intervention resolves it far faster than general revision.
Mock results were significantly below expectation. Mocks are the most reliable early signal available. A student who underperforms in February has three months to change the outcome — but only if the response begins immediately.
They are struggling with the mandatory experiments. Every science has them; they carry real marks, and they are frequently the last thing students revise. They are also highly learnable with structured support.
Confidence has collapsed. Exam anxiety measurably damages performance, particularly in Maths. Sometimes the most valuable thing a tutor provides is a calm, consistent, judgement-free space to rebuild belief.
They are in Transition Year and thinking ahead. TY is genuinely the best time to consolidate Junior Cert foundations and begin building the algebraic fluency that Higher Level Maths and Physics will demand. Students who use TY well arrive in 5th Year with a real advantage.

Advice for Parents
You do not need to understand the SEC syllabus to make a meaningful difference to your child's CAO outcome. These are the things that genuinely matter.
- Check matriculation requirements in 5th Year, not 6th. This is the highest-leverage thing you can do. Sit down with your child, look at the courses they are interested in, and confirm they are taking the required subjects. Subject selection is reversible in 5th Year and effectively irreversible in 6th.
- Understand the Higher Level Maths bonus and make the decision deliberately. If your child is considering dropping to Ordinary Level Maths, work through the arithmetic together before deciding. A H6 at Higher Level beats an O1 at Ordinary Level by 15 points. The decision should be made with the numbers in front of you.
- Diarise 1 February, 1 March, and 1 July. These three deadlines have real consequences. Put them in your own calendar, not just your child's.
- Treat Change of Mind as the real application. Sit down together in June with mock results and revisit the entire list honestly. Add Level 7/6 options. Reorder by genuine preference.
- Encourage a seventh subject. The insurance value is real.
- Do not use last year's points to talk your child out of applying for something. Points move. The only way to guarantee not getting a course is to leave it off the list.
- Protect sleep and downtime. Students revising while chronically exhausted retain substantially less. Six focused hours beat ten depleted ones; this is well established and consistently ignored.
- Keep the outcome in proportion. The CAO system has more routes than it appears to. Level 7 to Level 8 progression, PLC courses, Available Places, repeating the Leaving Cert, and mature entry all exist. A disappointing Round One is a setback, not an ending.

How are CAO points calculated?
CAO points are calculated from a student's best six subjects in a single Leaving Certificate sitting. Each Higher Level subject can contribute up to 100 points (H1) and each Ordinary Level subject up to 56 points (O1). The maximum from six subjects is 600 points, rising to 625 with the Higher Level Maths bonus.
What is the maximum number of CAO points?
The maximum is 625 points, six H1 grades at 100 points each (600), plus the 25-point bonus for Higher Level Maths.
How does the Higher Level Maths bonus work?
Students who achieve an H6 or above in Higher Level Maths receive an additional 25 CAO points, applied automatically when Higher Level Maths is one of the six counting subjects. This means a H6 in Higher Maths is worth 71 points, more than a H4 in any other subject.
Is it better to do Higher or Ordinary Level Maths?
For most students, Higher Level. A H6 in Higher Level Maths (46 points + 25 bonus = 71 points) is worth more than an O1 at Ordinary Level (56 points). Higher Level is only the wrong choice if a student is genuinely at risk of an H8, or if the stress of the Higher paper is damaging their performance in other subjects.
How many subjects should I sit for the Leaving Cert?
Six subjects is the minimum for most matriculation requirements, but sitting seven is strongly recommended. Only the best six count toward points, so a seventh subject provides insurance against one exam going badly without any downside to the points total.
How are CAO cut-off points decided?
Cut-off points are not set in advance. Applicants for each course are ranked by points, and offers are made from the highest score downward until all places are filled. The points score of the last person offered a place becomes the published cut-off. Points therefore rise when demand increases or places decrease.
Do CAO points change every year?
Yes. Points change annually based on the number of applicants for each course, the number of places available, and overall national Leaving Cert performance. Last year's points are a guide only and should never be used to decide whether to apply for a course.
What is the Change of Mind facility?
Change of Mind allows applicants to add courses, remove courses, and reorder their preferences free of charge between 1 May and 1 July. It exists so students can revise their application after mock results and further research. Restricted-application courses cannot be added during Change of Mind.
Should I list courses in order of preference or by likelihood?
Always in genuine order of preference. The CAO issues only one offer per list per round, the highest course you qualify for. Listing a less-preferred course above a more-preferred one can only harm your outcome. There is no tactical advantage to ordering by likelihood.
What are matriculation requirements?
Matriculation requirements are the minimum subject and grade requirements that must be met to be eligible for a course, separate from points. They typically include minimum grades in English and Maths, a set number of H5 grades, and often course-specific requirements such as a laboratory science for Health Science courses or Higher Level Maths for Engineering.
Can I get an offer in a later round if I accept a Round One offer?
Yes. Accepting a Round One offer does not remove you from consideration for courses higher on your list. If a higher preference becomes available in a later round, it will still be offered to you.
What happens if two students have the same points at the cut-off?
If more students achieve exactly the cut-off score than there are places remaining, random selection is applied. All applicants on that score are entered into a random draw for the remaining places.
What are HEAR and DARE?
HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) provides reduced-points entry for students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. DARE (Disability Access Route to Education) provides reduced-points entry for students with a verified disability that has significantly affected their education. Both require indication of interest by 1 February and full supporting documentation by 1 March, deadlines that are strictly enforced.
Do Ordinary Level subjects earn CAO points?
Yes, but fewer. An O1 earns 56 points, equivalent to a H5 at Higher Level. Importantly, an O7 (30–40%) earns zero points, whereas a H7 at Higher Level still earns 37 points.
When should I get grinds for the Leaving Cert?
The most effective times are when a student is borderline on Higher Level Maths, when they are one or two grade bands short of a target points total, when a single topic is blocking progress in a subject, or after disappointing mock results. Transition Year and 5th Year are the highest-leverage times to begin; 6th Year intervention still works but leaves less runway. Getting the Most from Your Leaving Cert
The CAO system rewards students who understand it. Not through tricks or gaming, the system is deliberately designed to make honest preference-ordering the optimal strategy, but through informed decisions made early. Take Higher Level Maths if there is any realistic prospect of an H6. Sit a seventh subject. Check matriculation requirements in 5th Year. Use Change of Mind properly in June. Fill in the Level 7/6 list. And focus improvement effort on your weakest counting subject, not your strongest.
